Bathing:
If your finances permit, it is worth getting your Newfoundland professionally groomed every 6-8 weeks. Again it is dependent on your own dogs ability to spot a muddy pond from 500 yards and roll in it, but it is a good rule of thumb.
Make sure that your groomer is experienced both with Giant Breeds and with double coats. It will normally cost somewhere between £40 and £50 depending on location and it will mean that all the problem areas are trimmed and your Newfie smells delicious - at least until they find a nice bog to roll in.......usually on the way out!
There will be times when you can't get to the groomers or, even worse, you have an emergency fox poop situation. You may decide that you want to do full grooms yourself.
Invest in a blaster if you can afford it. The smaller ones are around £100 and are perfectly sufficient for just one Newf but we love this one.
A large Easidri towel is also a great addition to your grooming kit. It sucks up a large percentage of water from the coat, is machine washable and is best used when it's damp like a chammy cloth.
Always use a good quality shampoo and always condition. You'll find our favourite ones towards the end of the page.
Try to get as much of the excess water off as you can before you even consider letting them out of the bath. Towel dry them as thoroughly as you can and then move them to the blast zone. It works the same way as a hair dryer only it's a lot more powerful. I struggle to get mine totally dry as the undercoat tends to trap a bit of the water so no matter how thoroughly you blast them, that last bit of water will then sweat out after you have finished.
You however will be drenched, with hair like the wild dog woman of Cornwall, be covered in fur .....and smell funky..... or maybe that's just me!

Wahl do a fabulous range of shampoos that we use and you can find them really easily on the internet. We also use the Easy Groom Conditioner for a smooth and silky coat.
Our friends also love the following ranges for their large dogs:
Earthbath’s comprehensive line of natural shampoos, grooming wipes, and spritzes offer heavenly scented solutions for the unique needs of your pet, including everyday cleansing and coat conditioning, relief from itching or hot spots, combating pests, skin sensitivity or allergy, odor relief, and more. Paraben and sulphate free too!
Our favourite is the Mango Tango shampoo with a built in conditioner. Great for big swishy tails that tangle easily. You can find it here on Amazon.
Animology do a great range of mild, yet deep cleaning shampoos enriched with vitamins and conditioning properties. Their Fox Poo shampoo is great for 'rollers'.
Tropiclean do a gorgeous range of natural shampoos, sprays and conditioners. Their colognes which are fortified with UV protection and oatmeal, are great for freshening up a coat and removing nasty smells, replacing them with tropical delights.
